Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue has chosen an outgoing Republican House member to lead the state panel overseeing North Carolina's ports.
Perdue announced Wednesday state Rep. Danny McComas of New Hanover County is the next chairman of the State Ports Authority and will resign from the House effective this weekend. Previous Chairman Carl Stewart recently resigned and former Raleigh Mayor and ex-Transportation Secretary Tom Bradshaw became the authority's executive director last week.
McComas already wasn't running for re-election to the House this November after 18 years in the chamber.
Perdue said in a statement McComas' appointment shows her commitment to the success of the ports and finding the best person for the job no matter the political affiliation.
McComas is a trucking company executive.
