NC Commissioner Steve Troxler: Forest Service Offering Military Discount

The N.C. Forest Service is continuing its sale of tree seedlings, offering military members a discount on tree orders during the month of November.

  • Well tomorrow (Wednesday) is Veteran’s Day, so it seems fitting to talk about a discount our N.C. Forest Service is offering military members on tree seedling sales.
  • Members of the armed forces will receive a 20 percent discount of seedling orders, up to a $100 discount. The discount applies to the first $500 of all new orders.
  • Active, honorably discharged or retired military personnel are eligible for the discount. Proof of service is required. That can be a valid military ID, Department of Defense Form 214/215 or National Guard Bureau Form 22/22A.
  • Agriculture and the military represent the two largest economic drivers in the state and we proudly partner together on a number of initiatives including farmland preservation.
  • So we are happy to be able to offer this discount to our service men and women.
  • The Forest Service’s Nursery Program produces million of quality seedlings annually, including nearly 50 species of conifers, hardwoods and understory plants.
  • We offer Eastern and Carolina hemlocks and genetically improved loblolly pine seedlings.
  • Included in the genetically improved stock are longleaf pine, shortleaf pine, white pine and other species. These seedlings offer better volume growth, form, disease resistance, straightness, and other characteristics needed to produce quality forest products.
  • Hardwoods are sold in quantities as low as 10 and conifers in quantities as low as 50. For those wishing to submit larger orders, the nursery sells tree seedlings by the hundreds and thousands.
  • Tree orders can be ordered by 1-888-NCTREES or 1-888-628-7337 or by visiting www.buynctrees.com .
  • A user-friendly catalog is available at www.ncforestservice.gov. Catalogs are also available at local NCFS offices located in all 100 North Carolina counties.
  • Distribution of tree seedlings will take place December through mid-April, depending on weather conditions.
  • Forestry is a renewable industry, with the forest sector contributing around $33.6 billion annually to the economy and supporting more than 150,000 jobs for North Carolinians.
