Market Report

 

Cattle:  At the livestock auctions held Thursday in Smithfield, a total of 551 cattle were sold.  Compared to last week, slaughter cows were steady.  Slaughter bulls had too few to test.  Feeder heifers, 300-400 lbs were 5.00 to 8.00 higher, 500 lbs 8.00 lower; 450-550 lb bulls were 8.00 to 10.00 higher; steers 400-450 lbs 10.00 lower.  It was reported that demand, market activity and buyer interest were moderate.  Offerings of cattle were moderate.  Cattle quality was average.  Average dressing slaughter cows brought $94 $114.  Average dressing slaughter bulls, 1000 lbs. & up, were at $115.  400-500 lbs. M&L 1-2 feeder steers were $230-$256 and 500-600 lbs. ranged $225-$234.  400-500 lbs. M&L 1-2 feeder heifers ranged $204-$235 and 500-600 lbs. were $186-$210.  Feeder Bulls, 400-500 lbs ranged $220-$251.

 

 Broiler-Fryers:  The North Carolina broiler-fryer market was steady and the live supply was adequate to meet the moderate demand.  Average weights were desirable to heavy.  The estimated slaughter for Friday and Saturday in North Carolina was 3,515,000 head compared to 3,436,000 head last Friday and Saturday.

 

 Cotton:  The strict-low middling one and one sixteenth Southeast average price is 61.27 cents per pound; the U.S. average is 59.48 cents per pound.

 

 Grain:  US 2 Yellow Corn: was 3 to 4 cents higher. Prices were 4.22-4.67, mostly 4.53 at the feed mills, and 4.04-4.52, mostly 4.28 at the elevators. US 1 Yellow Soybeans: were 20 to 24 cents higher. Prices were 10.53 at the processors, 9.79-10.33 at the feed mills, and 9.63-10.13, mostly 9.63-9.74 at the elevators. US 2 Soft Red Winter Wheat: was 2 to 3 cents higher. Prices were 4.03-4.64, mostly 4.38-4.43 at the elevators.  Soybean Meal (f.o.b.) at the processing plants was 427.60 per ton for 48 percent protein.
