Fourth Hog Farm Nuisance Trial Underway in Raleigh

The fourth of 26 hog farm nuisance lawsuits is underway in Raleigh. The federal case against Smithfield Food’s subsidiary Murphy-Brown centers on Sholar Farm in rural Sampson County, 80 miles south of Raleigh, where eight plaintiffs living around the farm seek unspecified damages for years of odor, truck noise and flies.

The first three suits against Smithfield Foods all resulted in wins for the plaintiffs, awarding millions of dollars and forcing the three farms in question to be depopulated of pigs. Those three cases are awaiting appeal and have gone to mediation.
