Farm Bill Now Coalition rallies on Capitol Hill for Farm Bill Action

The American Soybean Association and more than 90 other groups – part of the Farm Bill Now Coalition – held a rally on Capitol Hill this week to call for passage of a Farm Bill Now. ASA President Steve Wellman says these groups represent all aspects of agriculture and all regions of the United States. He says the farm bill really is a bill that affects every American…

“As a nation we are faced with the critical task of getting our fiscal house in order. The farm bill that is under consideration now, will take steps to do just that. Agriculture remains the only sector of the American market place that has proposed a concrete plan for deficit reduction within its programs. It is a bipartisan plan and should be acted on now. Agriculture demands investment, but we also recognize that it must be made responsibly and strategically. When you look at the farm bill and the many titles, it is more than a bill for just farmers.”

Agriculture has a major impact on the U.S. economy – as one out of every 12 jobs are connected to agriculture – a message that Wellman and the coalition told Congress this week…

“It really makes you wonder why some in Congress don’t think it should be a priority and why it has not been brought to the floor for action. Let’s bring it to the floor of the House, let’s have the debate, let’s make any changes and move it forward to the conference committee.”

“If the house would act on the five year farm bill, it includes livestock disaster assistance. It’s in the Senate version that was passed and it’s in the House version that is currently out on the Ag committee. Just one more reason to pass the five year bill and have the certainty of the disaster assistance.”

Wellman calls on ASA members, supporters and customers to utilize ASA’s new Soy Action Center to contact their representatives and ask for a Farm Bill Now.
