Commissioner Weathers: Perdue Visit a Boon to SC Agriculture
Ag Commissioner Hugh Weathers hosted US Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue on Saturday for South Carolina farm visits and to hear the questions/concerns of farmers and ag industry folks.
Stop One: City Roots Urban Farm, Columbia, SC
  • Owner Eric McClam, Commissioner and Secretary Perdue toured their greenhouses
  • City Roots specializes in microgreens and mushrooms
  • Around 30 farmers and ag industry people came together at City Roots to ask the Secretary questions regarding the upcoming Farm Bill
  • Specialty crops, farm labor, conservation, grants were all comments that came up
Stop Two: Manchester Farms in Hopkins, SC (quail)
  • Owners Britney and Matt Miller gave a tour of the processing plant facility and the hatchery
  • Farmers and ag industry people (about 20) came to eat lunch and speak with the Secretary
  • Gov. Henry McMaster joined us and spoke about the state
  • Immigration, dairy, cotton ginning, disaster funding and commodity questions were addressed
  • After lunch, they went to tour the quail farm and the egg room
  • Two barns: one barn has day old quail and the other has mature birds (about one month old)
