Commissioner Weathers: Homegrown by Heroes

Certified South Carolina Grown is a proud to support The Homegrown By Heroes campaign through its brand. Commissioner Hugh Weathers is here to tell us more about this partnership.

  • Last Tuesday I was honored to attend the Veterans Harvest Dinner at City Roots in Columbia, South Carolina.
  • Military veteran chefs prepared a multi-course dinner at to celebrate veterans in the culinary and farming worlds.
  • Homegrown by Heroes campaign, similar in concept to the Certified SC Grown program here in South Carolina, is a branding campaign that uses the Homegrown by Heroes logo and stickers to inform consumers of items produced by military veterans.
  • The South Carolina Department of Agriculture was happy to be one of the first states to sign up for The Homegrown By Heroes campaign in 2013.
  • South Carolina is proud of its large military presence because of the many bases, including a variety of military branches, located in South Carolina.
  • The South Carolina Department of Agriculture believes that supporting veterans, current soldiers, and their families is very important.
  • South Carolina has partnered with the Homegrown By Heroes label and have elected to promote it separately, but in harmony with our own ‘Buy Local’ label, Certified South Carolina Grown.
  • Other State Departments of Agriculture have officially partnered with the Homegrown By Heroes label to produce a merged label combining elements of the state’s own ‘Buy Local’ label and the Homegrown By Heroes label.
  • The Homegrown By Heroes (HBH) label serves to inform consumers that agricultural products donning the logo were produced by U.S. military veterans.
  • Who is Eligible:
    • Veterans of any branch of the U.S. Military from all service eras–including those currently serving
    • Those who received a characterization of service of ‘Honorable’ or ‘General (Under Honorable Conditions)’ upon discharge
    • Agribusinesses and farming operations that maintain a minimum of 50% veteran ownership and a minimum of 50% veteran management control
    • Value-added products that contain a minimum of 50% non-water ingredients produced by an HBH-certified producer
  • The Homegrown By Heroes label differentiates veteran-produced products in competitive markets.
  • As South Carolina’s Commissioner of Agriculture, I am happy to support Veterans and especially Farmer Veterans because of how much they mean to this state.
