Commissioner Weathers: Commissoner’s Cub BBQ Cook-off This Saturday

The 7th Annual Commissioners Cup BBQ Cook-off and Festival is happening again this weekend. Ag Commissioner Hugh Weathers is here to tell us about this event and some updates on what is new this year.

  • The 7th annual Commissioner’s Cup BBQ Cook-off and Festival is Saturday, March 24 from 11 am- 3 pm at the SC State Farmers Market, located at 3483 Charleston Highway, West Columbia
  • Tickets are $5 per person, children under 12 get in free with a 3 canned good donation to Harvest Hope Food Bank
  • The event bring around 40 cook teams from all over the state to compete for the SC State Championship Title- this is declared by Governor McMaster.
  • The teams prepare Boston butts and ribs to turn- in for judging and then serve the remaining BBQ as samples to event attendees.
  • Cook teams must represent 2 of the 4 styles of South Carolina barbecue. Those are:
    • Lowcountry style- a spicy vinegar/pepper sauce. Meat can be rough chopped or finely chopped.
    • Midlands Style- a distinctive mustard sauce. Meat is either pulled, chopped or sliced.
    • Pee Dee Style- Rough or finely chopped BBQ with a light tomato sauce.
    • Upstate Style- Pulled, chopped or sliced meat with a heavy tomato sauce.
  • Besides sampling BBQ, there will also be a fun and educational kids’ area, you can shop a variety of craft and specialty food vendors
  • There will be an antique tractor exhibit, live music from Going Commando Band, and much for fun for the while family
  • If you get tired of eating BBQ, there will be other food vendors on site selling a variety of non-BBQ food items, sweet treats and drinks.
  • There will be a Kids Q where children of the cook teams compete to see who can cook the best and most tasty burger
