Commissioner Hugh Weathers: Palmetto Series Food Drive

The Palmetto Series Canned Food Drive starts October 29th through November 18th. Ag Commissioner Hugh Weathers is here to talk more about Palmetto Series Canned Food Drive and how it impacts South Carolina’s communities.

  • The University of South Carolina and Clemson University will launch the Certified SC Grown Palmetto Series Food Drive on October 29th. This is a coordinated effort to benefit Harvest Hope Food Bank and Golden Harvest Food Bank and tackle hunger within their communities.
  • Estimates tell us that 40% of the food grown in the U.S. is wasted somewhere along the way, and the estimated cost of food waste is more than $200 billion. That’s twice the profits of grocery retailers in this country.  It’s even more mind boggling when you consider the hunger and poverty in this country.
  • Right here in South Carolina, one in six families doesn’t know where its next meal will from, and one in five children goes to bed hungry every night.
  • Collected food donations between the two schools will be measured in pounds, and money donated will be converted to a number of pounds via an equation used by Harvest Hope and Golden Harvest.
  • The university that raises the most donations in non-perishable foods by November 20 will earn a point for their school towards the 2018-19 Certified SC Grown Palmetto Series standings.
  • The winner of this matchup will be announced at the Clemson vs. South Carolina football game on November 24, so if you’re in the stands next weekend make sure to look for that!
  • Even if your team doesn’t win the big game coming up at the end of the month, it could win the food drive if you get involved.
  • Clemson fans can donate non-perishable food to collection points at various BI-LO grocery stores and at locations on the Clemson campus.
  • BI-LO sites in Columbia are collection sites for Carolina fans, as are certain locations on the USC campus.
  • The beneficiaries of this worthy drive are Golden Harvest Food Bank and Harvest Hope Food Bank.
  • Be sure to donate by November 18th.
