Commissioner Hugh Weathers: Holiday Fun throughout South Carolina

It’s officially December, and holiday cheer is in the air! Farms throughout the state have fun planned for the whole family! Commissioner Hugh Weathers is here to tell us about some holiday events going on!

  • Besides picking out a Christmas tree at one of our farmers markets or heading to a Christmas tree farm, South Carolina farms offer so many family fun activities during the month to get you in the holiday spirit, many of the farms part of SC’s Agritourism Association
  • This weekend, there are plenty of opportunities across the state:
    • In Bennettsville at McArthur Farms on December 8 from 9 AM-11 AM, it’s Breakfast with Santa. Tickets to the event are $20 per person and this includes breakfast, meeting Santa, writing and mailing a letter to him, decorating cookies, and a live Nativity.
    • In Lake City at Moore Botanical Garden on December 8 from 10-2, enjoy the Wreath Wonderland. You will learn how to create a wreath from materials found in Moore Farms Botanical Garden. How much more local SC can you get than that? Tickets are $30 per person and it includes a lunch.
  • Next weekend, there are a few more events happening:
    • In Lexington at Wingards Market on December 15 it’s Wingard’s Family Christmas from 9 AM-5 PM. Meet Mrs. Claus, ride the Santa train and come to the market for hot apple cider and cookies. Attendance is free.
    • Starting next Saturday through December 23, is Aiken’s Christmas in Hopelands Gardens. This is the 27th year for this event and it is a great one! Spend time walking through the Gardens and sip on hot chocolate or apple cider. There are over two miles of lighted pathways and illuminated displays with over 100,000 twinkling lights.
  • Agritourism is a booming industry for South Carolina agriculture. With an association of over 300 members, events like these really show the diversity of farms and all the great things they have to offer.

  • In addition to all these fun activities, the South Carolina Agritourism Association is holding their 2019 Annual Conference January 28 and 29 in Seabrook Island at St. Christopher Center. This is a 2-day conference that includes excellent networking opportunities, group bus tours to agritourism farms, special guest keynote speakers, a variety of discussion topics on agritourism trends including farm liability, social media, outdoor education and field trips.
