Avian Influenza Update

Several states in close proximity to South Carolina have had case of avian influenza this year, both high-path and low-path.

South Carolina’s ag commissioner, Hugh Weathers explains that while the majority of the cases have been of the low-path variety, there were two cases of high-path, both in Tennessee.

The united States has the strongest avian influenza surveillance program in the world, and the USDA actively works with it’s partners to look for the disease in commercial poultry operations, live bird markets and in migrant wild bird populations.

Because of these efforts, and more, this year’s cases were kept contained.
