Recently, the South Carolina Food and Cosmetic Act contained a provision that helped honey bee hobbyist in South Carolina. SC Commissioner Hugh Weathers says the new legislatione exempted bee hobbyist that sell honey from their own farms, roadside stands, etc. directly to the consumer in an annual amount less than 400 gallons or about 4,800 pounds, annually.
Those that wish to sell honey as a hobbyist must follow SC labeling requirements on all contianters of honey, and alsomust file for the exemption on forms provided by the SCDA. Those forms are available by contacting SCDA Food Safety and Compliance Office.
