South Carolina's Ag Commissioner Hugh Weathers s ays that one of the roles at the SCDA is to administer programs and services that facilitate the efficient and fair marketing of agricultural products. They work closely with community based farmers' markets located throughout the state and some are in unusual settings. For instance, Conway has a farmers' market under a bridge and Anderson has a farmers market in a hospital.
It's a sure sign of Spring when the State Farmers' Markets get geared up for their Spring Flower Festivals. Weathers explains that the green industry accounts for $270 million dollars in annual receipts a year, the state's number two industry in cash receipts.
South Carolina has three State Farmers' Markets, one in Columbia on Bluff Road, The Pee Dee Market in Florence, and the Greenville Market in the Upstate.
