American Petroleum Institute Says RFS Isn’t Working

The American Petroleum Institute says the Renewable Fuel Standard isn’t working and should be revamped and better managed to ensure its long-term viability. According to API Downstream Group Director Robert Greco - the RFS has been the most important mechanism for bringing biofuels into the nation’s energy mix. But he says it’s being undermined by impractical requirements and bad agency decisions. Greco says the biofuels volume requirements will push concentrations above the safe E10 level - and accuses the EPA of approving the sale of E15 despite compatibility problems and ongoing engine testing. According to Greco - the EPA has failed to resolve the problem of fraudulent renewable fuel credits and continues to require blending cellulosic ethanol into gasoline even though no one is producing it for commercial use. Greco says the latter is regulatory absurdity - driving up costs and doing nothing to increase the use of biofuels.

The American Petroleum Institute represents more than 500 oil and natural gas companies.
