Animal Research Minute - Radiation kills cancer cells, but it also can damage healthy tissue. But what if this could be avoided?

Well, according to the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology, researchers believe they may have found a way to avoid damaging salivary glands during radiotherapy treatment for head and neck cancer. By studying rats, scientists discovered the stem cells essential for regenerating salivary glands can be avoided during radiation, thus preventing many serious side effects. This discovery could help the 500,000 patients a year worldwide living with head and neck cancer.
