Animal Research Minute - Dogs & Human Cancers

Did you know our pet dogs get many of the same types of cancer we do?
 

Well, The Wall Street Journal reports researchers are developing a new approach to treating cancer, and dogs are the first beneficiaries. The approach is called personalized medicine, which means you would receive the best cancer therapy for your specific cancer based on a genetic analysis of your tumor. Because dogs and people have genetic similarities and get many of the same types of cancer, studying how dogs with cancer react to therapies helps not only people, but also the dogs.
