North Carolina:

The state received above normal precipitation and below normal temperatures last week.  Statewide soil moisture levels were rated at 11% short, 73% adequate and 16% surplus. Precipitation and cooler temperatures in many areas limited field work compared to last week. Producers continued to plant small grains, harvest apples, cotton, peanuts, soybeans, sweet potatoes and cut hay as weather permitted.

As wet weather delays the harvest over much of North Carolina, Extension crops experts encourage soybean growers to combine as early as possible to prevent yield losses due splitting, lodging or poor threshing of the plant. However, they caution, if soybeans are harvested at greater than 14 percent moisture, artificial drying is necessary. Growers should manage their options for storing higher-moisture soybeans according to the following recommendations.

Winter wheat -- 23% emerged. 10% fair, 84% good, 6% excellent.

Cotton crop -- 73% harvested.

Sweet potato -- 88% harvested.

Soybean crop -- 94% leaf dropped, 35% harvested: 2% very poor, 7% poor, 38% fair, 48% good, 5% excellent.

Peanuts --84% threshed.

Corn for grain: 89% harvested.

Winter Wheat: 57% seeded, 24% emerged.

Cotton crop -- 80% harvested: 11% poor, 60% fair, 27% good, 2% excellent.

Peanut crop -- 94% dug, 83% combined: 3% poor, 16% fair, 58% good, 23% excellent.

Soybean crop -- 92% dropping leaves, 41% harvested: 3% poor, 19% fair, 62% good, 16% excellent.
