Animal Research Minute - Could a brain parasite change our brain chemistry?

Well, new research from the University of Leeds has shown being infected by a certain brain parasite can affect the production of dopamine, a key chemical in our brains. Researchers studying mice found that mice infected with this parasite had significant changes in behavior – including losing their natural fear of cats. These studies with mice could ultimately shed new light on treating human neurological disorders that are dopamine-related such as schizophrenia, attention deficit disorder and Parkinson's disease.
