Weekly Crop & Weather: SC, NC, VA

South Carolina:

Cool, wet weather swept over the State during the week ending October 23rd, 2011. A storm system passed through the State dumping over two inches of rain in some locations and dropping temperatures into the fifties and sixties during the day.  Soil moisture conditions improved to 9% very short, 29% short, 59% adequate and 3% surplus.

Winter Wheat: 25% planted, 8% emerged.

Cotton crop -- 97% bolls open, 45% harvested: 3% very poor, 12% poor, 42% fair, 41% good, 2% excellent.

Peanut crop -- 58% harvested: 3% very poor, 12% poor, 41% fair, 43% good, 1% excellent.

Soybean crop -- 80% leaves turned, 39% dropped leaves: 7% very poor, 20% poor, 40% fair, 32% good, 1% excellent.

Tobacco, 100% harvested, 93% stalks have been destroyed.

North Carolina:

The state received mostly above normal precipitation and below normal average temperatures last week.  Statewide soil moisture levels were rated at 1% very short, 13% short, 77% adequate and 9% surplus. Activities for the week included the continued planting of small grains and harvesting of apples, corn, cotton, peanuts, soybeans, sweet potatoes, tobacco and the cutting of hay.

Corn for grain -- 97% harvested:  27% very poor, 26% poor, 26% fair, 19% good, 2% excellent.

Cotton crop -- 96% bolls opening, 46% harvested: 4% very poor, 21% poor, 39% fair, 33% good, 3% excellent.

Sweet potato -- 74% harvested.

Soybean crop -- 58% leaf drop, 21% harvested: 1% very poor, 9% poor, 38% fair, 46% good, 6% excellent.

Peanuts --58% threshed: 6% poor, 27% fair, 56% good, 11% excellent.

Tobacco - Flue-cured, 97% harvested.

Virginia:

Field activities were slowed again this week due to rainy weather in Virginia. Soybeans and corn are responding well to the cooler night temperatures and warmer day temperatures although some mold damage has shown up in soybeans. Grain farmers spent time planting wheat and harvesting soybeans. Tobacco harvest is winding down as growers are preparing to go to the buying stations. Cotton is progressing and peanut yields are looking good. Vegetable growers continued to harvest greens, broccoli and other fall vegetables.

Corn crop -- 87% harvested for grain.

Cotton crop -- 97% bolls opening, 56% harvested: 11% poor, 60% fair, 27% good, 2% excellent.

Soybean crop -- 84% dropping leaf, 16% harvested: 2% poor, 19% fair, 62% good, 17% excellent.

Peanut crop -- 65% dug, 47% combined: 2% poor, 21% fair, 62% good, 15% excellent.
