Insured damages from Hurricane Irene's brush with the South Carolina coast are expected to be less than $5 million. The estimate comes from the South Carolina Insurance News Service, which is funded by companies that write about 70% of the insurance in the state.

Executive director Russ Dubisky says those companies have received only about 300 claims from the storm which passed by late Friday and Saturday. He says there sometimes are as many claims filed from a severe summer thunderstorm. The state Emergency Management Division tracks uninsured losses. It says damage was minor but it has no estimate. The main effects of the storm were some street flooding, beach
erosion and downed power lines.
