With the average age of the American farmer at 57, Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says the time for the next generation to step up and take on the task of producing the nation’s food and fiber is approaching fast. Vilsack spoke to state FFA presidents and officers on Thursday about the bright, rapidly changing future the next generation faces.

He says USDA is committed to partnering with them to achieve their goals, noting nearly half of USDA direct operating loans are provided to beginning farmers. Vilsack mentioned various programs through which USDA is investing in the next generation. He says USDA is committed to working with young farmers to ensure they have the support they need to be successful in the ag industry, one so vital to the safety and security of the nation.
