Dr. Mike Walden, NCSU Economist discusses the decline of carpooling. The 1980s saw the peak of carpooling and since that time it has dropped from 20% to 10% of the workforce. The decline reflects the changing layout of cities that have spread out the workplaces amongst suburbs and industrial parks, the cost of gasoline on an inflation adjusted price is actually less expensive today than in the 80s and lastly, the actual number of people who own cars has risen 60% since the 80s.
