Well according to Scientific American, new research suggests Salmonella could be used for antiviral treatments. Scientists think they could disarm the harmful qualities of Salmonella and use it as a vehicle to deliver treatments to the body. In a recent study, scientists gave altered Salmonella to mice and found it prevented the mice from becoming infected with cytomegalovirus – a very dangerous virus for which there is no vaccine. This research with mice is helping scientists discover how bacteria, such as Salmonella, can be used to treat illness in people.
