Animal Research Minute - Did you know a rat named Old Man recently died?

Well according to the Houston Chronicle, Old Man – a naked mole rat – was born in Kenya and came to the University of Texas in 1980 to help scientists with research on Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, cancer and age-related diseases. Old Man, who passed away at age 32, and other naked mole rats are perfect for studying age-related diseases because they live about 13 times longer than the average rodent, rarely get cancer and their bones stay strong as they age. Although the scientists who worked with Old Man are sad about his passing, they are certainly grateful for his special contribution to science.
