If you spend any time in fast food restaurants - you’re seeing more pork on the menu board. Pork Checkoff Assistant Vice President of Channel Marketing Jarrod Sutton says the momentum is in pork’s favor...

“Food services has been an incredibly successful year. You’ve had some really great home-runs that have had some national prowess. Folks like Burger King and The Ritz, Taco Bell recently launched what they’re calling their cantina tacos, of the three varieties available, the pork carnita is by far the best seller of the three. Pork is just smoking right now, it’s trendy, it’s hot. But, most importantly it seems that some of these culinary folks are recognizing what many of our folks on the pork industry side have known for a number of years is that it fits into so many different cultures and cuisines with such terrific flavor. And you know it’s versatile, we’re talking things like ribs at Burger King to pulled pork at Taco Bell.”

Sutton is seeing tremendous demand from Subway and other quick serve restaurants…

“Subway has been doing a fantastic job with a pulled pork sandwich test in several markets. They’re also doing breakfast, and of course any time you’re doing breakfast you’re talking bacon, ham and sausage, and an awful lot of product that we stay focused on. And we’re seeing some other opportunities starting to surface. I can’t tell you everything because of confidentiality. But, there’re a couple of big programs that are in the works right now for yet 2010. We’ll see this fall some major national awareness built for pork and certainly that will result in increased tonnage through the system as well.”
