NC Drought Conditions showed a slight increase in abnormally dry areas from 55.9% to 62.7% of the state as of the August 31st report.  NC Ag Extension reports the following regarding specific crops and conditions:

Cotton Crop in NC:  Most of the crop suffered some level of drought stress this growing season that has contributed to early cut-out and in some cases tremendous re-growth pressure.

Despite low numbers being reported in light traps, fall armyworm infestations have exploded this week in eastern NC. In turf, some lawns are disappearing overnight. The hot weather seems to be aiding their development.

Southern Stem Rot Active on Peanuts:  We’ve been seeing a lot of southern stem rot (white mold) on peanuts recently. It's pretty typical to get outbreaks when rain follows hot, dry weather. The white, stringy fungus, which often grows in a fan-shaped pattern, can be seen on lower stems and nearby soil during outbreaks.  To read the full report from Johnston County Extension office,  click here...

SC conditions remained the same as of August 31st report:

Virginia's August 31st drought report shows less area as abnormally dry and the moderate 41.8%  to severe 30.6% areas remained the same since the previous week's report...

In next week's report, we'll see what Hurricane Earl brought to the eastern areas - some of the summer's hardest hit drought areas...
