Posted on Thu, Jul 29, 2010

For the second year - the Pork Checkoff organized a Consumer Advisory Panel; a group that includes chefs, dieticians and food-bloggers. Mitchell, South Dakota Pork Producer, and Member of the National Pork Board Brad Greenway , serves as a farmer resource for this panel…

“You know, I tell you what we do, is we put a Power Point presentation together, show pictures of my family and the operation all the way from the sow facility…the modern facilities that we use today, and in trying to answer some of their questions they have. Another producer, Dave Renker from Pennsylvania, very similar operations, but a little bit different…so we both got up and put on Power Point presentations, and they ask us questions about why we do this stuff. They have to have a better understanding of the way we’re raising pork now, so that they can go out and actually convey to the people that they visit, their consumers and their customers on how we raise pigs.”

Greenway believes this Pork Checkoff project has had an impact…

“I think we did. And right off, the first night, we had a supper with them, and a couple of people didn’t understand how we raise pigs at all threw a couple of statements out there, well, instantly we try to answer those questions, why they were thinking that. And a lot of the stuff is just misinformation they’ve had about how we raise pigs. I think we’ve helped, it’s just getting the way we raise pigs now out to a bigger audience.”
