Well, according to WebMD, a lack of sleep can cause migraines and a new study with rats shows us why. Researchers deprived rats of deep, REM sleep for three nights and found this changed the expressions in certain proteins that regulate chronic pain. The sleep-deprived rats had low levels of proteins that shut down chronic pain. This means that getting several nights of poor sleep could put you at risk for developing migraines. Understanding how sleep affects migraines in rats could lead to new treatments for the 36 million Americans who suffer from migraines.
