This spring has seen an escalation in food prices around the world for the second time in three years. Marc Bellemare, Assistant Professor of Public Policy in the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University argues that food price inflation and subsequent food insecurity are instigators to the political unrest in the Middle East:
These events are not without precedence; events similar to what we’ve seen this spring occurred in 2008:
While in 2008 the cause of food price inflation was directly attributed to actual food shortages, this time, according to Bellemare, it’s hard to pinpoint:
But, Bellemare says it stands to reason the political uprisings goes back to food price inflation and food insecurity:
