National Pork Producers Council works year-around for pork producers across the country. Sam Carney, president of the National Pork Producers Council and producer from Adair, Iowa outlines some of the issues that NPPC has on their agenda for 2011.

"Other issues that we’re working on, environmental issues… it seems like EPA came up with new rules. We’re working with that, it is changing all the time. We have a full time guy that works on that all the time. Antibiotics is another issue we’re working on. We’ve got to educate and let people know that if you have a healthy animal, you have a safe food supply. And, they’re just like other people, they need to get vaccinated now and then – that’s just a good health standard. So, that we need to work on, too."

The antibiotic use in food animals issue comes and goes, but it’s bound to turn up again in the new year.

"You’re exactly right and we’ve just got to educate congress and the people on that, too."

NPPC is very active in educating the public about the antibiotics issue and many other animal agriculture concerns. To learn more, or to become involved, go to pork.org.
