U.S.-Cuba Policy Topic of Upcoming Hearing | (this news story is text only) | Program 848 Posted on Mon, Apr 26, 2010 |
The House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee will hold a hearing on U.S.-Cuba policy Wednesday. According to Chairman John Tanner - a Tennessee Democrat - the hearing will consider whether relaxing current Cuba travel and trade restrictions would advance U.S. economic objectives - as well as democracy and human rights in Cuba. Tanner says it’s clear to him that the embargo has failed to achieve its objectives and has shut U.S. workers, farmers and businesses out of the Cuban market.
Ag Committee Chairman Collin Peterson has introduced legislation to expand U.S. farm exports to Cuba and hopes to move it out of his committee before Memorial Day. Peterson’s bill - the Travel Restriction Reform and Export Enhancement Act - would also make it easier for American citizens to travel to Cuba to facilitate new agriculture sales.
