Posted on Fri, Apr 13, 2012

The 23rd annual Virginia Beef Expo is scheduled to get underway on Friday April 20th at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds near Harrisonburg, Virginia. Bill McKinnon, Mgr Virginia Beef Expo and Executive Secretary of the Virginia Cattlemen’s Association:

“It’s the showcase of our seed stock cattle industry in Virginia. There will be six pure bred cattle sales, a commercial heifer sale, several educational activities and a tradeshow. The weekend is time for our Junior Beef Roundup, our junior shows.”

McKinnon explains that the state’s youth organizations have a big part in the Expo:

“Saturday and Sunday are really focused on the Juniors. We are very proud of our youth cattle working contest. We hold the state championships at the Expo. We will have about 150 kids exposed to all the concepts of safe cattle handling and beef quality assurance. They will actually process some feeder cattle at the expo. It’s a great spectator event and a really good teaching event. The state FFA tractor driving contest as well as some stockman’s contests are held during the Expo.”

The Expo’s website has a lot of information for those that are interested in attending any or all of the Expo:

“There is no registration fee. Everyone is welcome to come. There is a lot to see if you are engaged in the cattle business. We’ll have some beef cooking demonstrations. You can visit our website vabeefexpo.org for a schedule of events. Many of the pure bred sales have their sale catalog posted.”
