The Pork Checkoff has developed a Producers, Pigs and Pork curriculum kit. According to Pork Checkoff Education Programs Manager Stacy Revels - this curriculum has five lesson plans available to help teachers in the third through sixth grade levels. Producers are encouraged to work with their local schools to make this curriculum available…
“The best way for a producer to get this into their local school is to get a copy of the curriculum, and then to take that to their school, if they have a connection there, maybe with a teacher, maybe that teach had educated the producers student before, or maybe you just know someone at the local school. Just take it in talk to whoever you know there, if you don’t know anyone, maybe try to visit with the curriculum director there at the school, or an administrator that you can share it with and what it’s intended to do, and hopefully they’ll be receptive and willing to take it up.”
Before joining the National Pork Board staff - Revels was a teacher - and she says this is a valuable resource…
“As a teacher you have very, very little time to plan ahead. And it’s often the resources that are the most conveniently packaged that make the most sense in your classroom that you end up using. And I think this one is put together in such a way that you can literally take off the shelf that day and go the same day. And that’s exactly the kind of resources I was looking for when I was teaching.”
Again - pork producers are encouraged to work with their local schools to expand the reach of these study materials…
“You get your hands on a copy of curriculum by going to the Pork Store at porkstore.pork.org, or you can also call our 800 number at 1-800-456-7675 and they can help you get a copy of the curriculum as well. It does cost $12 which is the basic cost for printing and putting together the materials.”
