Many parts of North Carolina are experiencing drought conditions…”the counties experiencing drought conditions has doubled in the past week, and that means that they’re ether under moderate or severe drought categories.” That’s State Division of Water Resources spokeswoman Sarah Young says Halifax, Hertford, Northhamption and warren counties are under a severe drought wile 39 counties are listed in the “moderate drought” category. Forty-five others counties are classified as “abnormally dry”.

Young says there are a few areas that are nearing the highest level of drought. “Those areas are in the western and northeastern part of the state”. So far this year no North Carolina county has reached extreme drought status, the highest possible, and while we haven’t’ seen water usage restrictions imposed yet, young says farmers right now are suffering the most…”right now we’re in what we call an agricultural drought, our water supply has not been affected, so farmers are experiencing poor crops especially corn is suffering right now. That’s Sarah Young with the Division of State Water Quality.
