Another Government Shutdown Looming

The threat of a government shutdown looms next week as lawmakers scramble to pass a last-minute stopgap bill to keep USDA and other departments running.

The money runs out midnight next Wednesday and the threat of another shutdown is real. Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid…

“We are at a crossroads. I am not sure we can make it. With the time set due to all of the unnecessary votes, I hope we can make it and not have to see the government shut down again.”

Chuck Grassley of Iowa says the Senate will vote soon to keep the government open, but will first send a message to House conservatives by taking a vote that will fail…

“Hopefully that shows the 30 Republicans in the House that are insisting on defunding Planned Parenthood that you can’t even get it to the President. But suppose you get it to the President and he vetoes it, then nothing can be accomplished anyway.”

And if the House conservatives don’t listen, and there is a government shutdown, Grassley says…

“Only those programs within agriculture that are considered crucial, like meat inspection and not price reporting.”

Farm payments, conservation programs, research and many others would cease.
