Animal Research Minute – Why does it get harder to multi-task with age?
Well, researchers at Yale have discovered that, as we age, the brain gets stuck when it’s trying to
transition between tasks. This explains why it can be difficult for the elderly to multi-task. By studying
rats, researchers discovered that as our brains age they lose the ability to recognize when it’s time to
move on to new tasks, which is necessary for everything from cooking to social situations. This insight
could lead to treatments that prevent the brain from losing this functionality with age.
