What could fruit flies teach us about Alzheimer’s disease?
Well, HealthDay News reports that scientists are studying fruit flies to learn about the genetic causes of
Alzheimer’s. Fruit flies and people have genetic similarities and amazingly share about two-thirds of
their disease genes. A gene in both flies and people has been linked to a genetic and aggressive form of
Alzheimer’s disease, so researchers are examining treatments for the disease in fruit flies to see if they
could one day be effective treatments for people. These tiny flies could lead to big findings for scientists
in search of cures for Alzheimer’s.
