FFA Global Outreach: Africa 2011 | (this news story is text only) | Program 4645 posted on Wed, May, 4, 2011, 12:00 PM |
FFA Global Outreach: Africa (FFA GO: Africa), a special program of the National FFA Foundation managed by the staff of the National FFA Organization, is made possible through a generous gift from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.
As a United Nations Ambassador against Hunger and a celebrated agriculturalist and humanitarian, Mr. Buffett shares the National FFA Organization’s objectives for this program to:
-
Engage students at a personal level in the global issues and challenges of agriculture, food, hunger, poverty and human suffering.
-
Inspire students to serve and make a positive humanitarian difference in the world through agriculture.
-
Prepare students for careers and leadership.
-
Demonstrate the relevance and positive impact of education in agriculture.
The next FFA GO: Africa program is scheduled for July 13-Aug. 1, 2011 in the African nation of Rwanda.
Applications are due postmarked by May 18, 2011!
The seven college-enrolled FFA members selected to participate in FFA GO: Africa will begin their experience with a two-day orientation before departing for Kigali, Rwanda, for an opportunity to learn firsthand about the serious challenges facing the developing world. Once there, they will live and work with the staff of Catholic Relief Services (CRS), whose goal in Rwanda is to contribute to a peaceful and productive society through development programs and peace-building activities. CRS helps those most needy to increase their food security and work toward self-sufficiency.
More information about the work of CRS in Rwanda can be found here - https://www.ffa.org/documents/glo_africa_rwandainfo.pdf
Following their stay in Rwanda, the students will return to the United States for a one-day debriefing before heading home. The students will be expected to generate reports and make post-trip presentations based on their experiences in the program. The students will be supervised on site by a globally experienced adult group leader selected by the National FFA Organization.
